Community Service

The mission of the HCCTA includes "giving something back" to our community with our programs. We provide tennis-related activities, educational opportunities, and other programs to enrich the lives of our players and our community.  The HCCTA funds programs and college scholarships from our endowment and we are always seeking donations to this fund to allow us to give as much back to the community as possible.

Helping others is a key part of what we do, and central to many of the programs we offer. We believe that these programs help teach our younger participants the value of helping others. We develop volunteer opportunities for high school students to meet the requirements of our scholarship programs.

We are expanding our HCCTA Community Service to any high school student who needs community service hours (i.e. Key Club, National Honor Society, seniors at Hamilton Southeastern). See our 2010 Flyer which explains the HCCTA Community Service opportunities and our reading programs.

2010 HCCTA Student Advisory Committee/SAC

SAC's primary responsibility is to administer HCCTA Community Reads. Students select and distribute the book, assist with the year end public event, and identify community service opportunities through tennis.

Zionsville Girls Fund Raisers

In 2009 the Zionsville girls tennis team raised nearly $5000 for the benefit of breast cancer through several fund raisers. The money was donated to the Vera Bradley Foundation. The team has been fund raising for ten years and three for Vera Bradley.

In late February the team was invited to the Vera Bradley facilities in Ft. Wayne. While there, they presented the check to the foundation.

Several of the team members were featured in the 2009 Vera Bradley Spring Catalog.

Carmel High School Girls Tennis Team does "Cook for the Cure"

Carmel High School Girls Tennis Team did "Cook for the Cure," a breast cancer project sponsored by Kitchen Aid. Coach Sharon Rosenburgh registered  the plate with Kitchen Aid. The team would "pass the plate" to a team member who would bring a food to their practices. Then the plate would be passed to another teammate. Each passing was registered on line at Kitchen Aid, who then donated $5.00 for each pass to breast cancer research.

High School Players Supporting Our Community

Hamilton County high school tennis players are a big part of our community service projects. This community service also can be used by players to be eligible for our college scholarships.

Clothing
Cell

Mandy Learned and Kat Brinegar (Noblesville High School Girls Tennis) collected used denim clothing and donated to a teen center.

Amanda Nguyen (Carmel High School Girls Tennis) collected old cell phones to raise funds for HCCTA.

2007 Projects

Below are photos from the June 3, 2007 Indianapolis Community Tennis Association Court Party held on the Barbara S Wynne tennis courts at North Central High School. HCCTA sponsors the short court tennis activity. This year's student volunteers included Carmel High School (Alicia Cousins, Christine Rubeiz) and Cathedral High School (Tyler Witsken and Travis).

Hamilton Southeastern High School Girls Team

Hamilton Southeastern senior players Katie Teitgen and Katelyn Dunn organized their team to donate tennis clothes and other clothing for Teen Challenge of Central Indiana.

They also collected food items and household products for Inspirations of Hamilton County.

Their success filled a pick-up truck!

Community Service for College Scholarship Applicants

Community service is a key part of scholarship criteria as HCCTA is an organization that thrives on volunteerism. Much can be accomplished when communities come together for a common goal.

All applicants for our college scholarships must participate in community service activities. Previous winners have participated in at least one program like the following:

  • HCCTA After School Tennis programs - taught immediately after school hours in Hamilton County elementary schools as enrichment classes. Contact Shannyn Miller for more information.
  • HCCTA After School Tennis Celebrations - Held for all participants in the After School Tennis Programs. To be held December 2008 (usually first Sunday) at Carmel Racquet (2-3 hours credit). Contact Shannyn Miller for more information.
  • Summer Tennis Program -Volunteers are always needed for this program which runs through the summer months at Carmel High School, Hamilton South East, and other locations. Contact our tennis program coordinators to learn more.
  • Community Reads Program - This program brings high school tennis players, coaches, families, friends, and school leaders together to discuss a chosen book. Contact Helen Moser Petersen for more information.
  • Create Your Own Program - We are open to suggestions for developing your own community service program, as long at it meets our standards. To qualify a new program for our college scholarships, you must submit your ideas to our scholarship chairperson (below) who will review it and work with you as needed to it can comply with our service standards. Once she has approved your program, you are free to pursue it to qualify for our college scholarship application. Contact Helen Moser Petersen for more information.
